Fascinating holidays to Oman with Kuoni Reached by a relatively short flight, by long haul standards at least, and offering almost guaranteed blue skies, Oman is perfect for some winter sun and, in recent years, it has emerged as a hip holiday destination. This Arab state offers you so much more than just the perfect beach break. Seek out utterly beautiful mountain and desert landscapes; experience the genuine pride that the Omanis have in their country; and see an entirely different side of Arabia than you will find in the flashier neighbouring United Arab Emirates.

Sitting at the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, this is one of the region’s most traditional yet welcoming destinations. Explore historic castles, wadis and thermal springs; discover dramatic fjords and fascinating wildlife; and enjoy authentic culture and delectable cuisine in the sheer beauty of Oman’s landscape. An important trading port for hundreds of years, Oman’s capital Muscat is set between the western Al Hajar Mountains and the Sea of Oman – perhaps not what you would expect from a large city on the Arabian Peninsula. Wander along Mutrah’s Corniche which is lined by charming merchant’s houses and runs from Muscat Gate along the waterfront. Haggle for a selection of antiques, textiles and gold in the Mutrah Souk, a traditional Arabic market hidden just off the Mutrah Corniche. Within the walls of Old Muscat are sights such as the Al Alam Royal Palace – or the Sultan’s Palace – and the two forts of Al Jalai and Al Mirani which stand guard over the city’s historic harbour. A perfect addition to a stay on the coast in Muscat, the striking Nizwa region offers historic architecture and breathtaking natural landscapes. Set by a desert oasis and encircled by the Western Hajar Mountains and sprawling date plantations, the former capital of Nizwa is one the Sultanate’s oldest cities. Hiking trails will give you astounding views of the mountains and the nearby oasis town of Bahla is home to the ruins of Oman’s oldest fort and the resplendent 17th-century Jabreen Castle. Nizwa, like many towns and cities throughout Oman, has a buzzing souk where you can buy dates, spices and local handicrafts. Approximately three hours south of Muscat lies the vast wonder of Wahiba Sands, an ever-changing desert landscape that was named for the nomadic people of the Wahiba tribe. Depart from the capital and spend the day exploring undulating red and white dunes in a 4x4. Alternatively, spend a night under the stars at an authentic Bedouin desert camp. You can take part in ‘dune bashing’ which involves descending seemingly vertical dunes, witness remarkable desert sunsets and enjoy a traditional Bedouin dinner before congregating around the camp fire and witnessing the majesty of a star-filled Omani sky. Separated by the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is perfect for those seeking a little adventure as you try out rock climbing, canyoning, hiking, sea kayaking and scuba diving. You can reach the capital city of Khasab by a flight from Muscat or by road from the United Arab Emirates. Alternatively, those looking for a more sedate experience can enjoy a cruise on a traditional dhow cruise or a sunset cruise around the stunning Musandam khors (fjords) and try to spot the bottlenose and spinner dolphins that frequent these waters.
